It is that time of year – karate competitions, gasshuku’s and gradings! The year has started well for Winelands JKA team, winning a total of 20 medals (11 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze) at the Western Province Championship held in March. 12 of the Winelands JKA team members were chosen to represent WP at the SA Championships which will be held in Johannesburg in July. Furthermore, our students also have multiple gradings to look forward to, and for those who do well at the SA Champs the chance to represent South Africa in Mauritius at the Indo Pacific Cup in September.
Being well-trained and prepared for these events is very important for any karate-ka. Yes, we need to train and practice in order to perform well on a given day. However, in the karate dojo we train in order to be prepared on any given day. The difference between preparing for a single event vs. preparing for any given event is that you are always ready to tackle whatever is thrown at you. It also gives peace of mind, and confidence in our abilities and eliminates a great deal of stress from our daily lives.
Karate is not only an activity to get fit and learn self-defense. Yes, you will gain those things too, but all of Karate’s principles (just like the importance of preparation) can be applied to one’s daily life. If you are in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs or live in Durbanville and its surrounds, come join us at Winelands JKA to learn more about all of Karate’s benefits!
